Server Update, Info, and Suggestions

The player rankings for our server are up and running. It will display your rank upon you joining the server, and welcome you back. If at any time while playing you wish to see your rank out of all the people that have played on the server type !rank in the chat box.

Next item of business is the Server Start Award. If you and three to five of your buddies get on our server and get it started when there is zero to four people in the server you all will be rewarded with a reserved slot that is good for seventy two hours after the time it is awarded, and the server will notify you at the time it is awarded.

In the near future VIP Players will be offered for a donation. The donation will last a month at which time if you wish to keep your VIP privileges you must donate the amount (undetermined as of this time) again. VIP privileges, at the moment, include immunity to auto balance, immunity to being killed by the kit/weapon limiter(it will just spam you with a message), and a VIP slot. VIP privileges can be revoked if abused or you do something terribly wrong and an admin bans you.

Also there is a new weapon messages feature, and I would like some peoples help to come up with some creative messages. Some generic examples are listed below. %n is the player doing the killing. %t is the victim.

Yeah that was a ton to type. I didn't proof the weapons msgs and come I copied in as examples from another forum and if you do want better messages post up some better ones. Just saying they suck helps me in no way to make them better.

Well, I didn't just say they sucked. I pointed out that there are many typos, which I think is a helpful thing to point out. Also, saying that they suck means you should try to do the opposite of what was posted. I will admit the post is vague, so to counteract that vagueness I will post a very long and in-depth explanation of why those messages suck.

The following message sucks:

It sucks because it makes absolutely no sense. Let's take a look at the first part of the sentence: "%n is a water bug". Now, there is nothing grammatically wrong with this sentence. It just doesn't make any sense with the context of the sentence. I am assuming this message is printed when someone gets X number of kills with the grenade launcher in the patrol boat. If this is the case, the water bug comparison doesn't fit very well. It's obscure and I'm pretty sure water bugs don't bombard land targets with any sort of projectile. The only connection that I can think of is that they both float on the water. Not only that, the sentence could be interpreted to mean that the person is literally a water bug inside of a patrol boat. That would just be silly. Try to make comparisons that make sense and are easily understood.

Now, on to the second part of the sentence. Here lies one of the biggest flaws of the message: "in the Light river patrol boat 20mm automatic grenade launchers". This is madness. Not only is it too wordy, it is grammatically incorrect. Inserting the word "with" between "boat" and "20mm" fixes the grammar issue, but it still sucks. Removing excess words will fix this problem. The readers of the message don't need to know that the grenade launchers are 20mm or automatic. Instead just say "grenade launcher". It's also safe to assume that the readers know that patrol boats function in the water, so you can remove the word "river" as well. You get the idea. Remember, sometimes less is more.

The final product should be something along these lines:
"%n is a nautical madman with the patrol boat's grenade launcher! (X kills)"

To sum it up: Don't use any of those kill messages. I don't know what forum you got them from but 95% of them are terrible. They are full of typos and they suck. Instead, read them over, pick out the flaws, and then correct those flaws to turn them into something that does not suck.
